Dealing Texas Holdem Poker
Dealing Texas Holdem is a fairly easy skill to develop, and is your first step to becoming a live poker player. At the table you have yourself the dealer, the small blind and the big blind. After each round of betting the dealer position and the blinds rotate to the left. The small blind places one half of the minimum bet into the pot and the big blind places the full size of the minimum bet into the pot before receiving any cards. The dealer starts by giving one card face down to the small blind, then the big blind, and continues this until he gives himself one card. The dealer then places once more card face down in front of every player at the table starting with the small blind.
After every player at the table has two cards face down in front of them the player directly to the left of the big blind is the first to act. He has three options, fold, call by placing the minimum bet into the pot, or raise, by placing two times or more the size of the minimum bet. This continues around the table until everyone has either folded, or called the current bet at the table. If no one has raised the pot the small blind only has to place the other half of the minimum bet into the pot and the big blind can simple check to see the next round of betting.
The dealer now places one card face down in the fold pile and places three cards face up in the center of the table. The first to bet on this round is the small blind. He may check or bet. If the small blind is not currently in the hand then the first to act would be the big blind. If he has folded as well, its the player still remaining in the hand who is to the left of the dealer. After each player has called the current bet, or the table has checked around the table if no bet has been placed one more card is placed face down in the fold pile and one more card is placed face up in the middle of the table.
This round of betting is known as the turn or fourth street. Again the player directly to the left of the dealer is the first to act. After every player has called the current bet one more card is placed in the fold pile and the final card is placed face up in the middle of the table. This card is known as the river. The player directly to the left of the dealer is first to act and action continues until every player has either folded, leaving an unopposed winner, or every player has called the current sized bet. Players turn over their cards in a clockwise fashion starting with the player directly to the left of the dealer to determine a winner. The player with the best five card hand wins the pot.
In heads up play the small blind is also the dealer. The other player is the big blind. The small blind acts first during this initial round of betting. For the remaining three rounds of betting, the big blind is first to act. Head's up is by far the most confusing when it comes to dealing Texas Holdem. As long as you remember the small blind is also the dealer, you'll be fine.
